The Russian Federation came in first at the World Robot Olympiad.

1/3 of all medals at the WRO in Costa Rica was won by Russian roboticists: 5 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. The contestants were trained by the Innopolis University team.

The Russian Federation came in first at the World Robot Olympiad.

The two-day-long World Robot Olympiad 2017 held in San José has been officially closed. 392 teams from 53 countries were competing in four main categories: Regular, Open, WRO Football and Student Advanced Robotics Challenge (ARD). The Russian Federation was represented by 41 roboticists from 10 regions.

Participants from Russia earned gold medals in the Regular Junior High and Senior High Categories. Therewith, Russian contestants won all three medals in the Elementary Category. Gold medals were also taken in Open Junior High and Senior High Categories. The Innopolis team “Fixies” came in third in the WRO Football Category the second year in a row.

“Successful performance of the national team at the WRO 2017 in Costa Rica is routed in systematic work of the national organisers, and a forehanded strategy to form and train contestants. So, Innopolis University organised the federal training boot camp, schools of Olympiad training and teacher refresher courses” – explained Alexey Khabibullin, Head of Project-Oriented Academic Competitions Office.

“This is the triumph of the Russian national team. We won 8 medals and came in first in the overall standings. Our competitors from the second and the third positions have taken only 3-4 medals in total. We could have earned more medals in WRO Football if Russian teams were not tossed up to compete against each other’’ – continued Alexey Khabibullin. “Once the WRO 2017 had finished, we attended a meeting with the participants from other countries, who were interested in our successful training approach. We exchanged our contact details to arrange trainings with Russian coaches and two-way visits in order to share experience. Foreign colleagues and judges underlined that Innopolis University was well-versed in the sphere of Olympiad robotics”.

To remind, Innopolis University has been hosting the Russian Robot Olympiad and training the Russian national team for the WRO since 2014. Last year Russian roboticists won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals in India. The next WRO finale will be held in Thailand.
